The Galle Dialogue; International Maritime Conference was inaugurated by the Sri Lanka Navy since 2010 under the patronage of the Ministry of Defence. The purpose of this conference is to provide a common platform for stake holders of national and international repute to discuss and deliberate maritime related issues. Moreover, specifically enhance the cooperation of maritime security and sharing of knowledge and information amongst them.
The Indian Ocean has been witnessed an unparalleled maritime insecurity during the last decade such as proliferation of arms, piracy, human trafficking, maritime terrorism and narcotics trafficking which in turn threaten the stability in the region and pose great threat to Sea Lines of Communication. In this regard, Sri Lanka Navy played an enormous role for nearly two decades to defeat maritime terrorism and further strengthened the maritime security and safety of SLOCs in Indian Ocean Region. In this backdrop, Sri Lanka Navy is privileged to organize this annual event that aims at strengthening the regional maritime cooperation and formulating a global strategy to face common challenges in the maritime domain.
The last year’s ‘Galle Dialogue’ was held at commercial capital city of Colombo under the theme of “Fostering Strategic Maritime Partnerships”. The inaugural session was graced by His Excellency the President of The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Hon. Maithripala Sirisena as Chief Guest. The participation of more than 100 foreign participants including high level delegations in the forum was an illustration of the interest by regional and extra-regional stake holders on the maritime affairs of the Indian Ocean.
This year’s conference will be held at Galle Face Hotel located in the commercial capital of Colombo. The city of Colombo is an internationally famous tourist destination and emerging as a dynamic trade hub connecting the world. Due to the strategic location on the East-West sea trade routes Sri Lanka then called Ceylon was used by Romans, Arabs, Persians and Chinese for trade by sailing vessels ever since 2,000 years. Colombo is a busy and vibrant city with a mixture of modern life and ancient historical colonial buildings and ruins that offers a variety of experiences.
